Institute of Logistics and Production Systems (BAY-LOGI)
The mission of Bay-LOGI is to promote R&D in Hungary and to conduct related applied research and development activities, mainly to support the innovative activities of the enterprises in this region.
The Institute of Logistics and Production Systems, as the Foundation’s second institute, was founded in 1993. The Institute was originally located on the campus of the University of Miskolc and moved to its current home in
Miskolctapolca in 1996.
As a result of the deliberate development matching to market demands, there have been significant changes in the activity and profile of the Institute in the last 15 years. In the beginning, the main research activities were logistics, production engineering, informatics and recycling. Since then several new fields of research have been started and strengthened, like structural integrity (safe ope-ration of structures), environmental management, mechatronics, moreover new departments were founded, like energetics, RES (Renewable Energy Sources) and material development, in the last few years. Accordingly, the number of people in the staff of the Institute increased, presently almost 60 people work in the Institute together the candidates for a doctoral degree.
The stability and the planning ability for our activities is strongly influenced by an unpredictable market conditions and uncertain economic and market situation on the one part of the companies (mainly small and medium-sized businesses). In spite of this fact, we have met our expenses since 2004. Unfortunately, a large number of businesses deem R&D activity necessary only when the results provide sufficent returns. Truly progressive and forward-looking attitude is infrequent. Therefore our ambition has been to co-operate with our partners to submit bids for R&D funds in the Hungarian and international tendering process.
For the sake of long-term stability, the Institute has tried to control its activities in order to accomplish different types of activities in the fields of research carried out by the Institute:
been driven to strengthen an integrating role in the region, the positive effects of which are apparent, e.g. Regional Innovation Council, the cooperation of establishing of Regional Development Agency, the preparation of innovation strategy funded by EU and covered Slovakia (the area of Kassa), in the PHARE funded bilateral projects.
To promote economic development for Hungarian companies, we have explored all the possibilities at the regional level provided by the National Development Plan of 2007-2013.
The members of Bay-LOGI participate in the basic, postgraduate and PhD training programs at the University of Miskolc. Therefore the Institute can attract talented students into certain research areas to provide the next research generation, moreover, to broaden a market-orientated research attitude and to improve the efficiency of the innovative chain.
To support the PhD training program, the Institute established self-funded scholarships for the subjects which connect to its own or tendering R&D projects (at present, there are three students of this kind in the Institute).
The Institute has extensive international partnerships which have been formed by the leaders and the members of the Institute with great care. The trust and importance of these partnerships are enhanced by different international projects which cover wide field, from the bilateral TÉT co-operations to the research and network projects funded by EU; and in which several foreign partner institutes have participated.
Our research workers have participated successfully in different types of programs: from the PECO-program, which is the overture of the western-eastern research cooperation, to the COPERNICUS, INCO-COPERNICUS, NATO, TEMPUS, EU 5th and 6th Frame programs; and they have participated in several projects funded by 7th Frame Program of EU.
The Institute obtained the, highly regarded, ISO 9001 quality assurance in 2006, and the Department of Structure Integrity and the Material Testing Laboratory has had the classification for the special ABOS 1, 2, 3 systems of Paks Nuclear Plant Ltd. since 2007.

- Develop its own R&D ideas (to work out new productions and technologies) by oneself or with companies, mainly with utilization of tender resources
- Co-operate in tackling R&D tasks of the companies within the framework of special order or jointly-submitted bids
- Provide knowledge- and technology-intensive services for undertakings (e.g software center, accredited material testing laboratory with special testing alternatives, expert services)
- Co-operate in expert training within the framework of special training programs (e.g. CISCO Academy, postgraduate courses, PhD training)
